The long and Windy Road

Since the last update we have pretty much been on the move. We left Mancos after a fantastic month of exploring Colorado and spent 2 days in Albuquerque, then moved on to Amarillo and spent 2 days there. Then we got to Oklahoma City and spent 4 days there with Joel’s dad and sisters, and had a nice visit with his daughter Olivia. I didn’t take pictures but we got a tour through the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art where she is the head docent.

Then we moved down to Cedar Lake in South East Oklahoma. It is a pretty place and we hiked around the lake the first day and then our problems started. Ugh

We were outside by the camp fire on our second night and went in to get something and smelled something funny. Turns out it was the control board of the air conditioner that fried, but we didn’t realize that at the time. When we went to bed we tried to turn the air on and it didn’t work. Luckily it wasn’t super hot that night or the nights afterwards. In the am we contacted the warranty people and then had to go direct to the manufacturer. Luckily we had just enough phone service to be able to place the calls. Faced with the option of possibly going back to Oklahoma City – 3 1/2 hours in the wrong direction we looked for a mobile service and there just happened to be a guy in the closest town. Long story short we got the air conditioner fixed and the thermostat changed so we tested the heater to make sure it worked. It didn’t! It was making a horrible noise. so we had to get that fixed too! Happy Day! Had to get a part ordered so we left a day late from Cedar Lake headed to Waxahatchie. Here are some pictures from Cedar Lake. It really is a beautiful place.

We had a surprise visitor! I did not know tarantulas lived in Oklahoma! This bad boy wandered through our campsite. He didn’t bother us and we didn’t bother him. Made me put my feet up off the ground though!

We hit the road at 9am and barley drove more than an hour and our the bad luck continued. The tire alarm went off for the second time on our adventures. At least we knew what it was this time but it didn’t keep my heart from stopping.

We got it changed and made it down to Greenville Texas. We were both so mentally exhausted that we decided to stop and regroup and get the tire fixed. It will be much easier making the trek around Dallas on a Saturday morning rather than a Friday afternoon. That was three strikes so we hope we’re safe for a while!

We are getting smarter and well seasoned with all of our experiences both good and bad. And in the past week we have questioned whether we are meant to be doing this! Resolved to continue and enjoy Marble Falls where we plan to stay put until December, then we have reservations in Corpus Cristi for January through March. Looking forward to a sunny and relatively warm winter!

    Kathy,

It’s incredible how many mechanical, etc. problems you have had!!! I’m just so relieved that you have been in a safe place or are able to get to a safe place. And, that was some tarantula! We have them here, but they are much smaller and are supposed to be harmless! (I’ve never tested that theory!)

So, if you ever need a break from roughing it in the wild and want to come stay in Tucson or if you do plan to stop through here in March or whenever you head north, I will be here except for a few dates:

Christmas – I’m flying to Richland on Fri, Dec. 20 and flying back on Christmas Day since all the celebrating will be done by then.

Oaxaca trip – I’m going with the Latin American Art Patrons (LAAP) at the museum on Feb 15-23, a trip your Dad and I always wanted to take. This is a real bargain trip, so we’ll see how good the hotel and the restaurants are. One of our artist friends has spent a lot of time there, so he put this together so we can visit lots of artists’ studios and galleries.

Madrid trip – This is a Contemporary Art Society (CAS) trip, from May 5 to May 11 and the usual gang is going (Mike and Jean, David and Judy, Patricia, etc) . I know Brandon’s conference is in Seattle Apr 30 to May 5 , so I’ll wait to see what their plans are. Maybe I could go to Seattle and then fly directly from Seattle to Madrid! We’ll see. If I miss Brandon then, I hope to see them next summer when I go visit my brother and family.

Here’s hoping your luck changes so you can enjoy your adventure!!

    Love,

    Marilyn
